Splenius Capitis Muscle Syndrome

splendius_head_1 The Splenius Capitus muscle is located along the back of the neck, under the muscles that are most visible. The Splenius Capitis muscle helps to support the head. When injured, it can cause severe pain.

splendius_head_2 Abnormal posture, accidents, and emotional distress are among the causes of Splenius Capitis Muscle Syndrome. The symptoms can feel similar to a migraine headache, and pain may be present at various sites:

Pain at the rear of the head
Headache at the temples
Headache and pressure behind they eye
Pain above or under the eye
Light sensitivity
Neck, shoulder and/or arm pain

Treatment

As with treatment for many forms of orofacial pain, treatment is dependent on the cause of the pain and may involve clinical and surgical techniques as well as behavioral or stress-relieving methods.

Clinical treatment of Splenius Capitis Muscle Syndrome involves injections of anesthesia into the affected area. Minimally-invasive surgical procedures can be used to permanently reduce nerve function within the muscle.
